Rafael Vazquez (left) and Manny Badillo of Dukes Landscaping in Joliet, plant bushes outside the Joliet Correctional Center on Collins Street in Joliet.
The Joliet Visitors Bureau and the city of Joliet are creating a tourist site there to highlight the history of the former prison. The Old Joliet Prison Park exhibit is funded by a grant from the Illinois Bureau of Tourism with matching funds provided by the city.
The landscaping was planned by area landscape designer Jeanne Phelan who also designed the gardens at the Joliet Area Community Hospice. A grand opening for the park will be from 2 to 6p.m. July 18 at the former prison.
